Instructed Eucharist

This year we will be trying something new and different to honor our children’s participation in Holy Communion. The Episcopal Church has determined that baptized children of all ages are welcome to receive Holy Communion at their parent’s discretion. This has often meant that children grow up receiving Communion from a very early age. This is a wonderful thing and it is also in keeping with ancient Church practice. At the same time, however, we have lost the sense of celebration surrounding a child’s first reception of Holy Communion once they come to an age of understanding. Additionally, instruction and education around the reception of Communion has not always been offered.
With this in mind, we are planning to have a Children’s Communion Class on Saturday, April 23rd with a recognition of the graduates on Sunday, April 24th at the 10:00 a.m. service. At the Sunday service, all graduates of the class will be invited to participate, be recognized, and will receive a gift.
The age range for this event is ages 5-12. If your children are interested or asking questions about Communion and are at least age 5 or older, then they’re likely ready for this class.
The Children’s Communion Class will be held on Saturday, April 23rd from 10:00 a.m.-to 12 noon. Parents are welcome to attend but do not have to. We will discuss the origins of Communion from Jesus in the Bible, the meaning of Communion, and we’ll practice the proper way to receive Holy Communion at the altar. On Sunday, April 24th, we will have an Instructed Eucharist and recognize all graduates of the class. This is also a chance to invite friends and family to celebrate together with the child(ren) and commemorate the special day in whatever way fits your family. Please contact the parish office if your child is interested in this class.
